Birds Eye Surveying – UAV

Unmanned Aerial vehicles commonly known as “UAVs” have lately made headlines for all the wrong reasons.  A recent example was an unfortunate athlete who sustained head injuries from a UAV which fell from the sky.

These incidents are thankfully rare, given the number of UAV’s which take to the sky each day for a varied number of uses such as:

  • Photography
  • Cinematography
  • Search and Rescue
  • Surveillance
  • Photogrammetry

KLM Spatial has recently trialled this new technology to photograph and survey several land development and subdivision projects.

With the assistance of local suppliers, our survey teams have tested sophisticated fixed wing UAV’s to collect aerial imagery.   The aerial photos are combined with ground measurements using sophisticated software on a high performance computer.

The completed process creates an accurate aerial map of the entire site and spot levels for the ground features.

Testing this UAV survey method against conventional surveys, we have been impressed by the capability of this “next generation” survey equipment.

UAV survey data can be manipulated by our professional team to meet the needs of:

  • Land Managers
  • Engineers
  • Town Planners
  • Hydrologist
  • Developers
  • Real estate Agents
  • Civil Contractors

Our tests have shown that a site of 20 hectares can be flown in less than 30 minutes and data is processed within 24 -48 hours.

This type of efficiency provides KLM Spatial Engineers, Town Planners and Surveyors with the ability to strategically interrogate a site in a very compact period of time, saving our clients both time and money.

Common UAV applications in surveying are:

  • Land Subdivision Projects
  • Bulk Earthworks monitoring
  • Stockpile Volume computations
  • Land fill monitoring
  • Site Mapping
  • Topographic Surveys
  • Surveys of inaccessible areas

After a successful trial period, KLM Spatial is implementing systems to incorporate UAV data into our standard operating procedures.

Remember, always confirm that your professional UAV operator is CASA Accredited and Licensed or you might make the newspapers for wrong reason.
